Jean Maine, born on August 25, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, in Hackensack, New Jersey. She was 79 years old.
Jean devoted her life to education and the well-being of children with special needs. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Child Study from St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, she continued her studies in Special Education at the College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, New York. Her academic pursuits laid the foundation for a meaningful and impactful career.
For most of her professional life, Jean worked at A Starting Place, a private school for preschoolers with special needs located in Pearl River, New York. There, she dedicated herself to helping young children develop the skills they needed to thrive both in school and within their communities. Her commitment to early childhood education and special needs advocacy left a lasting impression on countless students and families.
Outside of her professional life, Jean found joy in spending time with her family. She loved traveling with them and often visited New York City to enjoy plays and movies. Family vacations were especially cherished times for Jean—opportunities to create memories filled with laughter and love.
Jean is survived by her siblings John (Marlene), James (Noreen), and Annemarie; nephews Ken (Diane), Justin (Leanne), Marc Carrino, Dennis, and Ryan; nieces Dawn Jerome (David), Ashley Maine Pappas (Nick), Courtney, and Tara Edick (Kevin); grand-nephews Gianni, Anthony, Nico, Caleb Edick, Caden Edick, John Pappas, and Nixon Pappas; and grand-nieces Violet, Ava, Aubrey Edick, and Penelope Pappas.
Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched—both within her family and through her work with children. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. A Funeral Service will be held on February 6, 2026 at Edwards Funeral Chapel 160 Orange Ave. Service begins at 11:00am at Edward's Funeral Chapel 160 Orange Ave Suffern NY followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont NY.
