Jean Catherine Moore, a woman whose life was defined by love, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family and community, was born on May 31, 1949, to the late Gordan Moore Sr. and Ester May Ives-Moore in Salisbury Center NY .She was one of nine children and carried a spirit of kindness and generosity that touched countless lives.
Jean was preceded in death by her twin sister, Jane, who passed shortly after birth, and her beloved youngest son, Leroy F. Bennett Jr.
On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 1:54 a.m., Jean peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord, surrounded by love, with her devoted daughter Pearl and son-in-law Idell by her side.
A loving and dedicated mother, Jean leaves behind seven children: Cathleen, Patricia, Timothy, Charles, Sabrina, Pearl Williams (Idell), and Leroy (2024) Her legacy continues through her 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Jean was known in many neighborhoods as “Momma Jean,” a name that reflected not only her role within her family but also her presence in the lives of so many others. She was a woman who loved without conditions—feeding the hungry, opening her home to those in need, and offering comfort to anyone who crossed her path. Her kindness knew no limits, and her heart was always open.
She cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Jean’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She shared a special bond with her longtime care aide turned dear friend, Cindy Stuart, and with Amber Wood, who became like a daughter to her through her care, love, and compassion.
Jean also shared a lasting companionship of 35 years with Leonard Smith and held a special connection with her bonus brother, Timothy Wright. A bonus daughter Tammy Kerr who would always answer the phone when she called to chat. She was deeply loved and cared for by her daughter Pearl and son-in-law Idell, who devoted over 15 years to her care with love and dedication.
Among those who brought her special joy was her bonus granddaughter, Brandilyn Howard, who made sure she was always pampered and smiling.
Her grandchildren include Coriesha Hickey-Dawkins (Dominique), Corey Hickey Jr., Corstale Breland, Tatiana Breland-Allen (Ny), Shabraya Russell, Dabriana Russell, David Russell Jr., Daniel Bowser, Keyessance Blue, and Zachariah Williams, among many others who will forever cherish her memory.
Jean will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her life was a testament to selflessness, faith, and unconditional love.
A special thanks to Dr. Mary Ellen Lewis for ensuring my mother had proper care in her last days and to Hospice Care Of CNY.
