Jean Helen Winter

1931 - 2025

On November 24, 2025, our beloved mother, Jean Helen Winter, age 94, was called home to be with the Lord. Thus ended a life rooted in faith, devoted to Christ, and guided by God's Word.

Jean was a woman of unwavering belief, whose love for the Lord Jesus shone through every aspect of her life. She found joy in prayer, strength in Scripture, and peace in the promises of eternal life. She shared her faith through hospitality, generosity, compassion, and an unyielding trust in God's sovereignty, and was a godly example for her children and grandchildren.

She and her husband Paul raised their children to know and love Christ, teaching them to love, serve, and trust in Him always. As a grandmother, she invested heavily in building character and Christian maturity in the lives of her grandchildren. She rejoiced in God's goodness and many blessings with the arrival of each new great grandchild.

Born in 1931, Jean was the oldest child of Harold and Helen (Vouga) Smith, who owned and operated a dairy in St. Louis County (Missouri) for many years. She was fortunate to enjoy a youth surrounded by a large and loving extended family with godly parents and grandparents.

She graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1947, and married Paul H. Winter (1928-2007) in May of 1952. His career with International Business Machines (IBM) took them from St. Louis to Tulsa, OK; to Rochester, MN; and ultimately to Chappaqua, NY. In each community, they were very active in church, in evangelistic Bible studies and other Christian ministry work. Paul and Jean were among the founding families of Community Bible Church in the Kitchawan area of Yorktown, NY., and were very involved in that fellowship for many years.

In 1988, Jean and Paul retired to Ludlow, Vermont, where they attended the Ludlow Baptist Church, hosting many church picnics and other gatherings at their mountain home, "Winters'Treat." Many visitors enjoyed their hospitality and Jean's great cooking. After experiencing the loss of her husband in 2007, she lived on in Vermont for several years, then eventually moved with her daughter Paula to Greer, SC in 2015. In February of 2022, she decided to move to Rolling Green Village in Greenville, SC, where she enjoyed several years of independent living, while still near her loved ones.

Jean is survived by son Kevin (Lee) Winter of Ludlow, VT; son Art (Ruth) Winter of Kennebunk, ME; daughter Paula (David) Zitzman of Greer, SC; and son Roger (Jill) Winter of Crystal Lake, IL; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren who will never forget her example of faith and love.

While we grieve her passing, we find solace in the hope of Christ's resurrection and the assurance that we will one day be reunited in the place Christ has gone to prepare for those who believe in Him. (John 14:2-3)

Three weeks before she passed away, she was still able to play a favorite hymn on the piano ...

Praise the Savior, ye who know Him!
Who can tell how much we owe Him?
Gladly let us render to Him all we are and have.

Keep us, Lord, O keep us cleaving
to Thyself and still believing,
Till the hour of our receiving promised joys with Thee.

The family will gather in Vermont for a memorial service during the summer of 2026.
