Jeanette Marguerite Lane (née Smethurst), 82, passed away unexpectedly on February 23rd, 2026, in her home in Metchosin, BC, with her husband present. Jeanette will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, commitment to helping others, and her joyful singing.
Jeanette was born on December 12th, 1943, in Victoria, British Columbia. Jeanette and her husband Don married on July 10th, 1965, and were married for 60 years. She spent her life caring for people, both through her time as a psychiatric nurse at the Lions Gate Hospital and as a teaching assistant at Metchosin Elementary School. Helping others was what Jeanette lived for. Her years spent engaged in marriage coaching brought deep meaning to herself and others. The source of her energy for helping was grounded in her relationship with Jesus and her deeply held Christian beliefs.
A loving mother and cherished grandmother, Jeanette will be remembered for her love of baking, handy crafts, gardening, and travel. Her door was always open to chat or host, and she made friends wherever she went. A meaningful part of Jeanette's life were the years she engaged in mission work and exploring the world. She placed great importance on cultivating deep connections to her friends, family, neighbours, and church community.
Jeanette is survived by her husband Don, her two children Mark (Doreen) and Tania, her sister Sylvia, and her grandchildren Caleb, Thaddeus (Tamarah), Gideon, Hannah, and Ryan (Amber). Jeanette is also survived by her nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Jeanette's commitment to compassion and kindness lives on through her family and will affect generations to come.
A celebration of life will be held at Colwood Church (2250 Sooke Rd, Victoria, BC) on Friday, March 20th at 2pm, with the reception immediately after. If you are unable to attend in person, please email [email protected] for a livestream link. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favourite charity in Jeanette’s honour.
