Jill Elizabeth Durenberger (née Shafer), age 68, passed away peacefully at home in Wayzata, Minnesota, on November 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Jill was born on May 4, 1957, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Jack and Joan Shafer. She was raised in Minnesota, where she would later build the life and home that became the center of her family. Jill married the love of her life, Louis Anthony Durenberger, and they shared a devoted marriage grounded in family, faith, and service to others.
First and foremost, Jill was a mother. Being a mom was not just her role, it was her calling. She stayed home to raise her four children, pouring her heart into creating a home filled with warmth, stability, and love. Jill had a remarkable gift for hospitality and homemaking. She made her home feel welcoming to everyone who walked through the door. She cooked meals from scratch, baked endlessly, and decorated with impeccable creativity.
Jill was also a servant at heart. She volunteered at her church and non-profits, and she worked for many years at Minnesota Teen Challenge, where she supported individuals on their journey to recovery; work that was deeply meaningful to her. Helping others, listening without judgment, and offering compassion were central to her character.
She had an extraordinary ability to make people feel valued and loved. Jill formed deep friendships wherever she went, and many people considered her one of their closest friends. She loved meaningful conversation, laughter, and deep connection. She was immensely thoughtful and empathetic.
Jill was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Joan Shafer. She is survived by husband, Louis Anthony Durenberger; her children: Celesta Bork (Baretta) and their children Deidrick Hubbard, Olivia Bork, and Isabella Bork; Theressa Watt (Adam) and their children Hugo, Hazel, and Scarlet Watt; Breanne Johnson (Taylor) and their daughter Lyla Johnson; and Caleb Durenberger (Emily Bergstrom) and their children Linnea and Clara Durenberger. She is also survived by her sister, Julie, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Jill's final days were spent at home, where she was surrounded by her close family. Her family is profoundly grateful for the time they shared together, filled with love, gratitude, and heartfelt goodbyes. Her presence is profoundly missed, and her spirit lives on in all who knew her.
A celebration of Jill's life will be held on May 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church in Wayzata, Minnesota. The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to Dress For Success at dressforsuccess.org.
