Joan C. Kaps, 90, of Alpharetta, GA, lovingly known as Nana and Shotsie, passed surrounded by her family November 7, 2025. Born October 31, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, to Sarah and George Haggerty, Joan grew up with her beloved sisters, Patricia and Maureen. She graduated from St. Edmunds Catholic High School as class president. Upon graduation, she worked for the phone company and a real estate firm. Several evenings a week, Joan and her sister Maureen volunteered at a nearby NY Foundling home rocking and caring for infants.
In 1960, Joan married the love of her life, Richard E. Kaps, and together they raised their sons, Richard C. and Robert S., in New Rochelle NY, Ossining NY, and later Kinnelon, NJ. A devoted wife and mother, Joan served as a class mother, Cub Scout den mother, CCD teacher, and enthusiastic supporter of her sons' activities. She was also an active member of Our Lady of the Magnificat Catholic Church.
Joan later joined her husband in his business and became an avid golfer, enjoying many days together at Rockaway River Country Club. After Richard's cancer diagnosis in 1987, Joan remained his steadfast caregiver throughout his 14-year battle. Following his passing, she found community among friends at Lake Kinnelon and OLM. She eventually moved to Georgia to be closer to family.
Joan is survived by her son Richard and his wife Maureen; daughter-in-law Maureen; sister Maureen Lawrie; grandchildren Rick, Matthew (Paige), Shannon (Justin), Kevin (Madison), Nicole Kaps Lieberman (Joey), and Miles Kaps; great-grandchildren John Haggerty Kaps and Matthew Sullivan Kaps; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Richard, son Robert, and sister Patricia.
Joan will be remembered for her graceful kindness, strong faith, and lifelong devotion to her family. Her love and example will be forever cherished by all who knew her.
