Joan Delores Weeden

1931 - 2026

Joan Delores "Joanie" Weeden (née Lugg), a beloved mother, grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, in Round Rock, Texas. Born on November 7, 1931, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Ruth and Art Lugg, Joanie lived a remarkable life filled with creativity, adventure, and dedication to her family and passions.

Joanie was raised in the Lutheran faith and carried her devotion throughout her life. While living in Austin, she attended Messiah Lutheran Church and was an active member of the choir. Her faith was a guiding light that brought her comfort and community.

A gifted seamstress and quilter, Joanie’s love for sewing became both a personal passion and a way to connect with others. She was a long-standing member of the Austin Area Quilt Guild (AAQG) and participated in a smaller quilt guild where she formed lasting friendships. Her ingenuity shone through her invention of the Corner Cutter and other quilting templates that helped quilters achieve precision and efficiency in their craft. Joanie also shared her expertise by teaching sewing and quilting classes to countless individuals over the years.

Professionally, Joanie worked as the wedding gown specialist at JCPenney, where she helped brides find their perfect fit for their special day. She also broke barriers as a trailblazer for women during her time with Donahue Sales. Traveling across the Northeast while raising six children alongside her devoted husband Ray was no small feat, but Joanie embraced every challenge with determination and grace.

Joanie’s zest for life extended beyond her professional accomplishments. In her younger years, she was an exceptional dancer and square dancer. Alongside Ray, she traveled with fellow dancers to various destinations, creating cherished memories along the way. One particularly memorable trip took them to Hawaii, where Joanie had the unforgettable experience of dining and dancing with Don Ho—a highlight she treasured deeply.

Her adventurous spirit knew no bounds; Joanie traveled extensively around the world. Among her many escapades was riding an ostrich during one of her journeys—a testament to her fearless approach to life.

Joanie is survived by Donald Weeden (son), Thomas Weeden (son), Ruth Weeden (daughter), and Mery Weeden (daughter), and numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. She is reunited in peace with Ray Weeden (husband), Steven Weeden (son), Robyn Weeden (son), Renee' Husen (granddaughter), her siblings Donna and Jim and parents Ruth and Art.

Joanie’s legacy is one of creativity, resilience, faith, and joy. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her to embrace life’s adventures with open hearts and hands ready to create beauty.

May her memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
