Joel Ruiz

1944 - 2026

Joel “Jackson" Montez Ruiz, age 81, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 14, 2026, in Maplewood, Minnesota.
Joel was born on August 11, 1944, in Swede Hollow, on the Eastside of Saint Paul, Minnesota to Justo and Manuela Ruiz. He was one six brothers and three sisters.

For 47 years, Joel worked with unwavering commitment at Waldorf Paper, later known as Rock-Tenn. His strong work ethic and reliability left a lasting impression on his colleagues and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Joel was a devoted husband and married his high school sweetheart June, April 13, 1963. He was also a loving father to their four children: Tim (Peggy), Tony (Lisa), Joel (Jennifer), and Melissa. Joel was an especially proud grandfather to Alex, Dan, Josh, Sam, Ellis Jackson, Liza Jane, Tyler, Emma and Mia, who all brought him immense joy.

Throughout his life, Joel embraced many passions that enriched his days. He found peace and fulfillment as an avid fisherman (even making his own lures), a pickleball player and a golf fanatic. His dedication to the martial arts earned him a 3rd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and he shared his talent teaching countless students for many years.
Joel also made an impact in his community coaching neighborhood kids at Margaret Playground on the Eastside of Saint Paul. His coaching of football, hockey and baseball instilled self discipline and many valuable lessons to all the kids he coached throughout his life.

Joel’s memory will live on through the family he cherished deeply and the countless lives he touched with his guidance and steadfast support. May his legacy inspire comfort and gratitude in all who knew him.
