John Bauman, 78, passed away on December 27, 2025. He was born on May 16, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Sherry Norris; his daughter, Laura Bauman Shalem; his son-in-law, Avi Shalem; his beloved grandchildren, Isaiah Shalem and Leila Shalem; and his brother, Larry Bauman. He was predeceased by his parents, Mortimer and Carolyn Bauman.
John grew up in Brighton Beach and moved to Manhattan at the age of 13. As the saying goes, you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the boy, a truth John carried with pride throughout his life.
After earning his master's degree from the University of Cincinnati, John joined his father in the family lamp business, Plymouth Harlee, located on Grand Street in downtown Manhattan. He later pursued his passion for the law, graduating from Cardozo School of Law. John went on to work with the Olnick Organization while also building his own New York real estate business.
A generous and deeply committed philanthropist, John supported many charitable causes. He was especially devoted to fundraising and advocacy for the American Friends of Hebrew University, a cause that reflected his strong values and commitment to education and community.
John loved to travel, play golf, and was an avid New York sports fan. He took particular joy in cheering for the New York Yankees with his grandson and spending summers in Hemlock Farms, Pennsylvania with his granddaughter.
John will be remembered for his sharp mind, strong convictions, generosity of spirit, and deep love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, warmth, and unwavering passion for the people and causes he cared about most. Above all, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and son whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
