Obituary
John Cameron Carruthers
February 14, 1939 - January 14, 2026
John Cameron Carruthers of Coral Gables, Florida passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1939, John came into the world with a natural gift for warmth and humor that defined his life. He was laid back, generous and kind. He was born in Owosso-Corunna, Michigan to Cameron and Barbara Carruthers, and was the eldest of four children. His three sisters—Mary, Ann, and Camilla—followed, forming a life rooted in farming, hard work, loyalty, family and community.
John grew up as the first born son of Scottish descendants on his family's farm in central Michigan, where responsibility came early and community mattered. The Carruthers farm produced dairy and poultry products and grew to become the largest poultry farm in Michigan. John learned firsthand the value of showing up, doing your part, and taking pride in hard work.
John was extraordinarily personable, with a wonderful sense of humor- along with a slight mischievous streak. He was athletic- he especially enjoyed playing racquet sports throughout his lifetime. He loved time with his family, his beloved bride Ruth of over 50 years. They enjoyed travel on cruises, and games such as blackjack and craps, card games and Sequence. They lived in Maryland, but during the late 80's, fell in love with sunny Florida, where they lived the last 40 years of his life.
Professionally, John loved business. He was an employer, business partner, accountant, and CEO. He ran several businesses in technology, and healthcare. Though accomplished, he never let formality get in the way of his easy going manner, and was beloved for his love of helping people succeed in business.
John is survived by his second wife, Ruth Peterson Carruthers; his biological children Lauren Carruthers Kincaid (Steve Kincaid) and Philip Cameron Carruthers (Ellen Ogden); and his grandchildren Adam Joseph Kincaid (Avery Newmark), Jordan Philip Kincaid (Virginia Evans), Cameron Philip Carruthers (Milagro Crespo), Chandler Bruce Carruthers, and Caitlyn Ellen Carruthers. He was great-grandfather to Miles Philip Kincaid, Elizabeth Clara Kincaid, Louie William Kincaid, River Paul Kincaid, and Catalina Carruthers.
Through his marriage to Ruth, John was also blessed with three additional daughters, Ruth Ann Adam (Dave Adam), Mary Jane Hague (Andrew Hague), and Carol Lynn Richards. 4 additional grandchildren, Andrew and Christopher Hague, Dennis and Matthew Kinnard (Alayna Kinnard). And 2 additional great-granddaughters Isabelle and Eleanor Kinnard- each of whom held a place in his life and heart.
Above all, John was someone who made people feel welcome and enjoyed life to the fullest.
A celebration of his life will be held on his 87th birthday, Valentines Day, Saturday 2/14/2026 at Grand Living of Coral Gables, Florida from 1-3pm.
Private family interment of ashes will be at the Carruthers family farm and cemetery in Bancroft, Michigan at a later date, summer 2026.
