John C. Rapp Sr., 83, the self-proclaimed mayor of Barkertown, passed away peacefully on December 28 at his home in Nunda.
John, youngest child of Carl and Lucille Rapp, was born on February 21,1942 in Rochester where he lived through middle school until the family moved to Nunda. He graduated from Nunda High School in 1959 and then entered the Army from 1960-62. Upon his return home, he worked for RG&E for a while but eventually bought and took over the old Veley farm on Chidsey rd where he worked as a teenager. He was a proud small dairy farmer for 30+ years and loved his home and all that he created. John is a past member of the fire department and served on the town board for 12 years. John was also a member of the Trinity Church of Nunda and loved his church family. Once retired, he fished whenever he got the chance and when someone could take him. He loved to tinker on his tractors and machinery and continued to raise cattle to the end. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and community member and friend to so many. He loved and was loved by many neighbors and friends. He literally made friends everywhere he went, and anyone who knew him has a fond memory and "John story." His gift of gab with anyone he met was rare but so welcomed in this current age. Consider yourself lucky if you ever sat in the garage with him, drank a beer and listened to his stories.
John was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 61 years, Janet, just 5 months prior. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Marion (Tom) Recine and brother and sister-in-law Carl (Annette) Rapp, brother-in-law Theron Foote and sister-in-law Jean Manly. Also surviving are his four children, John (Mary) Rapp of Tully, NY, Brian (Debbie) Rapp of Fabius, NY, Stephen (Audrey) Rapp of Nunda and Cheryl Maxwell of Livonia, NY. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild with another on the way, many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends, including Randy Clinton Sr. whom he loved like one of his own. Special thank you to his nurses and aides at Murray Hill skilled nursing facility and his three home aides and buddies, "Jesse" and Sarah and June.
Friends and family are invited to call from 3-5 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at the Trinity Church of Nunda, 25 East St in Nunda. John's funeral service will take place on Monday at 11 am at the Trinity Church. A live stream of the service can be found on the Trinity Church of Nunda Facebook page.
