Juan Moreno Contreras, affectionately known as "Johnny" and "The Last Man on Rainey," 72, of Austin, Texas, passed away on December 18, 2025.
Johnny was born on May 4, 1953, in Austin to Julio and Francisca Contreras. He played guitar in Tejano bands throughout Texas and for his church, The World of Pentecost. He proudly owned and operated JC's Appliance Service in the Austin area from 1990 to 2017.
Johnny loved his family and spoke of his children at every opportunity: Daniel Soliz; Martha and Neil Gilbert; John and Marrissa Contreras; Josh and Eri Contreras; and Melissa and Nick Rodriguez.
He enjoyed walking around Town Lake, listening to music, and playing his guitars as loudly as he could. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his love for his kids, and by the wider public as "The Last Man on Rainey," a title given after two KUT Austin interviews where he shared his perspective on the gentrification of Rainey Street in downtown Austin.
Johnny is survived by his children; his grandchildren (Nicole, Leilah, Sue, Aubrey, Elijah, Dominic, Luke, Mackenzie, Hannah, Liliana, and Joel); and two of his siblings, Julian and Jesse Contreras. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julio and Francisca Contreras, and siblings Martin Contreras and Lupe Arroyo.
A memorial service will be held on January 7 at 10 a.m. at the Promiseland Theater at 1504 E. 51st Street, Austin TX, 78723.
