John Douglas Dunlap, 74, passed away on February 21, 2026, in Wylie, Texas. Born on March 7, 1951, in Archer City, Texas, John lived a life marked by resilience, leadership, and dedication to his family and passions.
John was the son of Pauline Campbell and Joe Bailey Dunlap and his brother Freddie. He demonstrated a natural aptitude for leadership early in life. From managing a Dairy Queen during his younger years to overseeing multiple KFC locations, John's career was defined by his ability to inspire and guide others. His exceptional work ethic earned him the prestigious President's Award from KFC in 1983.
In 1989, John embarked on a new venture by founding JD's Makit Green, where he channeled his love for landscaping into a thriving business. Known for his creativity and commitment to excellence, he left an indelible mark on the industry and those who worked with him. Beyond his professional achievements, John was also involved with Texas Voices and enjoyed playing in a band named Rise Above, showcasing his artistic side.
John was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church, where he found spiritual fulfillment and community. His faith provided strength throughout his life's challenges.
A loving husband to Robyn and a proud father to Jason (married to Ashleigh), Kyle (married to Candy), and Aaron (married to Luchee), John cherished his family above all else. He was also a doting grandfather to Aidan, William, Isabel, Westin, and Emily. Though predeceased by his parents Pauline and Joe Bailey Dunlap; his brother Freddie; and grandson Cheven, John's legacy lives on through the love he shared with those closest to him.
Ten years ago, John began his most difficult battle when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Despite the debilitating side effects of the illness—and later dementia—he faced these challenges with remarkable courage and determination. His fighting spirit remained steadfast until the very end.
John will be remembered as a man of strength and perseverance who touched countless lives through his work, music, faith, and unwavering love for his family. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on March 7, 2026, from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home 2343 Gage Rd. & HWY 78 .
