John S Gillespie

1973 - 2026

John Stephen Gillespie, known to those who loved him as Sean, was a man defined by courage, loyalty, creativity, and heart. Born in County Cork, Ireland, he proudly served in the Irish national police force, the Garda Síochána, dedicating his life to the protection of others. His life was marked by service, integrity, and quiet strength.
Sean carried that same bravery into his work as a firefighter. He continued his lifelong commitment to public service. He proudly served with the Brindle Ridge Fire Department and the Climax Fire Department, always placing others before himself.
Deeply proud of his Irish heritage, Sean often quoted Stephen, the Irish character from Braveheart: “It’s my island!” His humor, resilience, and fierce loyalty reflected that same spirit.
An avid reader, Sean treasured books for the freedom they provided — especially as Parkinson’s disease came early and progressed quickly. Reading allowed him to travel far beyond physical limitations. He also loved to paint and draw, using art as both expression and refuge. Creativity remained central to who he was.
Sean believed deeply in chosen family, a belief beautifully reflected in his love of Lilo & Stitch and its message of Ohana — that family means no one is left behind or forgotten. Though he had no children of his own, he formed profound bonds with those he loved and claimed as family.
Sean is survived by his chosen brother Vincent Sarno, whom he affectionately called “mo dheartháir” (“my brother”); Vincent’s partner Rachael Daley-Otto; and Vincent’s children Madeline Sarno, Dominic Sarno, and Connor Otto, who brought Sean great pride and joy.
He is also survived by his dear friend Tami Shook Stedman, her children Anthony and Arianna, and Arianna’s daughter Avery, whom Sean adored. His extended chosen family also includes Tabitha Perritte, Savannah Griggs.
Sean will be deeply missed by the friends he made during his time at Berea Health & Rehabilitation and Lexington Premier Nursing & Rehabilitation, where his warmth, humor, and unmistakable Irish spirit left a lasting impression.
A faithful and devoted friend, Dana Chasteen-Younkman, stood by Sean’s side in his final moments, allowing his loved ones the opportunity to say a final goodbye. Dana’s mother, also a friend to Sean, will remember him for his kindness and strength.
John Stephen “Sean” Gillespie will be remembered for his bravery, creativity, humor, loyalty, and unwavering heart. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he chose.
In honoring Sean’s final wish to be laid to rest near his chosen brother and family in Massachusetts, contributions to assist with these arrangements may be made by contacting Vincent Sarno at [email protected]
