John J. Hayes lll passed peacefully on January 19th, 2024 with his partner, Janel Whitney and daughter, Mara Hayes at his side. He lived with advanced pancreatic cancer for two years, receiving excellent care at Virginia Mason in Seattle, Washington. We were all very grateful to have had the two years post-diagnosis together.
John was also known as Dr. Sax among his friends. He was a talented musician who could play any instrument. His days with The Toby Lynch Mob, performing Irish folk songs, were legendary. John was an amazing cook, bringing love and friendship to any table with his food and conversation and could often be found enjoying the simple life on his sailboat.
John's goal was always to make people feel better after meeting him. He loved to make them smile and bring joy to their lives. He had a generous spirit and always gave people the benefit of the doubt. There is no doubt that his presence will be missed in communities in Massachusetts and the Florida Keys.
John is survived by his life partner, Janel Whitney, his daughter, Mara Hayes and her husband Brian Sullivan, and his grandson, Kieran Fiacco.
There will be no memorial service. Pick your favorite bourbon and make a toast to John.
