He served as Director of Research at the Department of Public Welfare in Boston, Massachusetts; Program Officer at The Ford Foundation; and Executive Director at the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research. His work improved systems, informed policy, and supported professionals dedicated to helping others.

In 2004, John settled in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he found great joy in the natural beauty of the region. He delighted in the wildlife and serenity of Fort DeSoto and the Boca Ciega Bay, places where he often spent time reflecting, exploring, and appreciating the world around him.
