John U Metzger

1935 - 2026

John U Metzger of Moraga, California passed away peacefully after a life well lived on February 25, 2026. He was born May 14, 1935, in Vandalia, IL, as son of Cecil George Metzger and Julia Faye Moore Metzger.

A lifetime go-getter with a strong work ethic, John graduated from Memphis State University in 1957 and then served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Midway. He spent his career in life insurance and retired as President from West Coast Life in 1996. He took pride in knowing his work helped to ensure financial certainty for families in time of need. In retirement, he volunteered time while serving on the boards of AASK and Alta Bates Hospital.

Survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jo Huber Metzger, three daughters and their spouses - Mary Frances and Dave Hastie, Cecilia and Rick Hults, Susan and John Van Hoomissen - and his son, James. He will also be remembered by his seven grandchildren, as well as his brother, Tom, and one niece and several nephews.

A fan of movie musicals, world travel, and all sports, he will be remembered for his renditions of Singing in the Rain, numerous family Thanksgivings in Maui, and three of the best seats in Pac Bell Park. John provided security, love and support for greater opportunities to the entire family.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, James G. Metzger. He was laid to rest on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, California. Contributions may be made in his name to Meals on Wheels America.
