John William Popenhagen, Sr., 86, passed away of a heart attack on January 28, 2026, in Escondido, California. Born on May 14, 1939, in Illinois, John lived a life marked by faith, hard work, and deep devotion to his family.
Raised on a farm in rural Illinois, John developed a strong work ethic early in life—driving a tractor by the age of six. He graduated from high school in Richmond, Illinois, and soon after began working for his uncle learning to operate heavy equipment. This early experience laid the foundation for a lifelong career in excavation.
Following high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was accepted into an elite training program for electronics. Graduating with honors from the Air Force Airborne Electronics School, he went on to serve his country by working on aircraft throughout his military career. His technical acumen and dedication were hallmarks of his service. He later enhanced his professional skills through certification at the Dale Carnegie business school.
After completing his military service and marrying Rita Lillian Popenhagen (the love of his life), John returned to the excavation industry—a field he would dedicate himself to for over 35 years. 17 of those years, owning his own business: "His Excavating". John's commitment to excellence and tireless work ethic earned him respect among peers and clients alike.
John's life was deeply rooted in faith. A born-again Christian, he became ordained in the Baptist church and served as a traveling evangelist alongside his wife and children. Together they shared messages of salvation through film and song while John preached with conviction and compassion. His unwavering belief and love for the Lord guided every aspect of his life.
A man of many interests, John was an avid reader who especially enjoyed adventure novels and stories about World War II fighter pilots. He had a passion for tinkering with cars and once pursued obtaining his private pilot license—a reflection of his adventurous spirit. He was also a devoted sports fan and loved watching the Denver Broncos play.
John's warmth extended far beyond immediate family; he had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Described as kind-hearted and devoted, he cherished time spent with loved ones above all else.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Tracy and Meirav; Erica and Jack; John and Heather.
His grandchildren Nicole; Steffany; Tiffany; Garrett; Joe; Taylor; Addyson and Eden.
His great grandchildren Kyleigh; Danielle; Kane; Dezmond; Grace; Hudson; Grizt; and Baylor.
