John Joseph Ryan (May 21, 1930, to April 27, 1996)
John Joseph Ryan, passed away in Fort Myers, Florida on April 27, 1996, at the age of 65. John was a beloved father to three children and loving husband to Irene. He was born in Manhattan, New York on May 21, 1930, to Patrick and Lizette Ryan. John grew up in the Bronx along with his sister, Marguerite (Peggy). He joined the army during the Korean War and maintained his dedication to his country as a VFW Post 1519 member. John met Irene while doing one of his favorite things, dancing, and they were married on September 22, 1956. John started his career as a New York City police officer then became a bus driver for Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MABSTOA) for approximately 30 years with his favorite run going to Orchard Beach. John continued to commute to work daily in his favorite Volkswagen Beetles after he and Irene moved their family of five to West Nyack, New York in 1963. Together they raised three children and were consistently living examples of strength, endurance, and love. Wonderful childhood memories include vacations to Amagansett beach where Dad perfected our swimming skills and taught us a few valuable life lessons; float over the “bloopers,” dive under the waves when you can, and crash through the rough ones when you must. He did just that as he survived heart valve replacement, strokes, and colon and bladder cancer, Irene always beside him for loving encouragement and assistance.
John and Irene celebrated their golden years in Fort Myers, Florida, where they continued their love of trips to the beach and flea markets, tried to play golf, and gazed back at the gators from their lanai. Visits back up north to visit family focused on his adored and treasured grandchildren. Precious time was sprinkled with building birdhouses, tossing balls back and forth, patiently reading books over and over again, and just resting on Grandpa’s lap.
John died peacefully at home in Fort Myers on April 27, 1996, with his beloved Irene at his side.
John is survived by Irene Ryan (Fort Myers, Florida), James and Greta Ryan (Midlothian, Virginia), Diane and William Palmer (Washingtonville, New York) and John and Michele Ryan (Lagrange, New York), ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Mary’s Church, Washingtonville, New York.
John will be deeply missed by friends, family and all who knew him. He was always a gentleman and lived a simple and generous life. His wealth was not measured by money or time, but by his rich, valuable relationships with people.
Although John has departed this earth, his spirit and love of life will always be with us.
