On December 16, 2025, John Herbert Witcher, the ever-steady pillar of our family, ended his journey on Earth and is now forever present with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born on November 11, 1933, Veteran's Day, in the midst of the Great Depression, John was one of seven children born to Scott Anderson Witcher Sr. and Kathleen Alice Stanford Witcher. He was born in Burnet County, Texas, and grew up in Lampasas, Texas. After high school, John served his country in the United States Air Force, where he spent many years on active duty before retiring as a reservist.
In 1954, John married Shirley Ann Cloud of Brownwood, Texas. They were happily married for 66 years until her passing in 2021.
While living in Valparaiso, Florida, John owned and operated Witcher Electronics. Together with their close friends, he and Shirley also co-owned The Swing Set Children's Clothing Store. After running successful businesses, he later worked as an electronics technician providing range support at Eglin AFB. John was active in his community, a member of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Auxiliary Police. Upon retiring, John and Shirley moved to Holt, Florida, and later to Crestview, Florida, where they lived and recognized a blessed life.
John will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He planted his children's roots deeply in the soil of life's most enduring values. He taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to love Jesus, be honest, stay strong, be kind, be generous, and learn to laugh at yourself. John loved reading nonfiction books, playing golf, laughing at himself, and sharing meals with his family and friends. He often laughed in a way that radiated contagious, sparkling happiness. The mischievous twinkle in his eyes will be missed by all who loved him.
John had a million funny stories that his family loved to hear him tell. Many of these stories involved his near-death experiences, which he made hilarious. He collected these stories while traveling to four continents, nine countries, and all fifty states. John and Shirley especially enjoyed their many road trips with John's sister, Jo Ann, and her husband, Jack. They enjoyed entertaining others with amusing stories of their adventures together.
While running businesses by day and raising four children, John did something that he had always wanted to do. He enrolled in and graduated from college at night, sharing this learning adventure with his children. John graduated from college just days before his oldest two children graduated from high school. He taught his children the value of hard work and the joy of lifelong learning. Among his children, grandchildren, and their spouses, there are numerous hard-earned college degrees. John made a large and long-lasting mark on the character of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
John was a member of several Baptist churches throughout his life. He supported their ministries with his prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. John taught Sunday School, chaperoned youth retreats, and served on many committees.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Scott Anderson Witcher Jr., his sister, Margie Nell Sutherland, and his son-in-law, Charles Boltz. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley, who was overjoyed to greet him in Heaven.
John is survived by his siblings: Jo Ann Garner, Bob Witcher, Ronnie Witcher, and Linda Priddy. He is also survived by his children: Jon David Witcher (Pam), Cathy Henderson Brown (Steven), Susan Witcher Card (Darrell), and Sandra Witcher Boltz.
At his passing, John was PaPa to eight grandchildren: Michelle Walters, Justin Witcher (Faith), David Henderson, Jessica Henderson White (Chance), Stephen John Card (Pamela), Matthew Card (Megan), Nathaniel Boltz, and Logan John Boltz; and twelve great-grandchildren: Jacob Walters, Emma Early, Zoe Witcher, Scout Witcher, Quinn Witcher, Aubrey Witcher, Chloe Card, Eliana Card, Leah Card, Olivia Card, Claire Card, and Hope Montanez.
