Johnnie "John" Ivelia, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandpa, passed away on February 2, 2026, in Salem, Oregon. He was 74 years old.

John was born on June 23, 1951, in Torrance, California, and spent his early years in San Pedro, California. As a young man, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He worked as a lifeguard, enjoyed diving and fishing, and never outgrew his love for Disneyland.

John graduated from San Pedro High School in June 1970 and went on to complete a four year Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeship. He proudly served in the United States Army from September 1972 to September 1974. Following his service, he worked at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard from 1978 to 1992 and later dedicated 13 years to Cherriots Bus Service after moving his family to Salem, Oregon in 1992.

On June 21, 1977, John married the love of his life, Judy Blum. Together they built a beautiful life centered around family, laughter, and memories. One of John's absolute favorite things to do was jump in the car with Judy, turn on some good oldies music, and just go for a ride. Those drives, windows down, music playing, side by side were some of his happiest moments.

He was a devoted father to his daughter, Rachel Renee Ivelia, and his son, Anthony Joseph Ivelia, and Anthony's wife, Reagan Ivelia. Nothing made him prouder than his family. He became "Grandpa" to Cole Anthony Ivelia, Alex Ivelia, Evan Charles Ivelia, Emilee Elizabeth Wheeless, and Easton John Ivelia. Being a grandfather was one of his greatest joys. He rarely missed a baseball, football, volleyball, lacrosse, or basketball game, always cheering proudly from the stands. John loved fishing, firing up the BBQ, spending time with his dogs, and celebrating the holidays. He enjoyed trips to the casino and evenings watching sci-fi films, westerns, and classic 1990s action movies. He was a sports fan, especially of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers. His favorite player was LeBron James, and he loved talking about every record he broke.

Those who knew John will remember his infectious sense of humor and gift for storytelling. He loved telling jokes, making people laugh, and filling a room with energy. He gave generously his time, his energy, and his love. He was baptized Christian and carried his faith quietly but sincerely.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Eleanor Ivelia. He is survived by his twin brother, Frank Ivelia; Frank's wife, Merry; their son, Christian; and daughter, Faith; his devoted wife of 48 years, Judy; his children; and his grandchildren, who will carry forward his stories and laughter.

Larger than life in personality and proud beyond measure of the family he built, he leaves behind a legacy that will echo in every joke told, every backyard BBQ, and every drive with the music turned up.

Though our hearts ache in his absence, we find comfort knowing he is at peace, embraced by God's grace, and watching over the family he loved so fiercely until we meet again.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on April 3, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 8089 SE 112th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97266.
