To know Johnny Mykoff was to know enthusiasm, curiosity, and kindness. His warmth and genuine interest in people made others feel welcome in his presence, and many lasting connections began simply by sharing a moment of conversation with him.
Born into a proud family legacy - People's Shoe Store, founded in 1928 by his grandfather, Isaak Mykoff, in Alexandria, Louisiana, and later carried forward with his parents, Alvin and Joen Mykoff - Johnny continued that tradition after moving to Houston in the 1990s, working alongside Jim Perce, first at Harold's in the Heights and later at Norton Ditto.
Over the course of his lifelong career in the fine shoe industry, he earned respect, trust, and lasting relationships. Customers returned not only for craftsmanship and expertise, but because they enjoyed his company, his enthusiasm, and the kindness he showed to everyone who walked through the door.
From an early age, curiosity about how things worked led him into electronics and ham radio, where he became a licensed operator and discovered a profound joy - meeting people from around the world and learning about their lives through conversation and shared curiosity. That same spirit later guided him into the world of computers and technology, where he continued learning with the enthusiasm he carried throughout his life.
A deep sense of wonder also drew Johnny to space exploration and the mysteries of the universe. A lifelong fan of science fiction, he loved stories of discovery, possibility, and the great unknown - expressions of the imagination and lifelong curiosity that defined him.
Outside of work, he delighted in simple joys - among them a fondness for sports cars. Friends who shared that passion often visited to show him their cars, and sometimes trusted him with the keys for the thrill of a drive.
Johnny was passionate about photography, a love he shared with his wife, Riki, and their son, Daniel, as they traveled together in search of natural splendor across the United States.
Above all else, he was a devoted husband and father. His family was at the center of his life, and his love and loyalty were the truest expressions of who he was.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Riki, and his sons, Daniel and Jason. He will be deeply loved and dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and by all who had the good fortune to know him.
