Joseph Raymond Krauss

1936 - 2026

Joseph Raymond Krauss was born in Coatesville, PA on July 9, 1936 to Margaret and H. Joseph Krauss. He passed away on February 3, 2026 at Paoli Hospital surrounded by family. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Krauss, and his sisters Arlene (Krauss) and Anne (Gingalewski). He is survived by his sister, Rose (Reid) and his nephews, Brian, Robert and Jeffrey Reid.

A lifelong resident of the West End of Coatesville, Joe proudly served his country by enlisting in the Army after graduating from Coatesville High School in 1954. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point before being deployed to Germany following WWII, where he guarded the Russian border during the Cold War. During his service in Bad Kissingen, Germany, Joe met the love of his life, Josefine (nèe Schreier). They were married and returned to Coatesville, where they made their home until Josefine’s passing in 2024.

After retiring from the military, Joe continued his commitment to service through education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Science from West Chester College and Master’s degrees from both West Chester and Millersville State Colleges. He devoted his professional life to teaching science at North Brandywine Middle School and chemistry at the high school in the Coatesville Area School District, where he also coached basketball and baseball. After retiring from the Coatesville School District, Mr. Krauss taught at the Torah Academy of Greater Philadelphia and the Akiba Hebrew Academy. As an educator, Joe was a positive and lasting influence whose impact was felt across generations of students.

Joe was a proud veteran and an avid marathon runner alongside his wife, Josie. He was often seen jogging through Coatesville carrying the American flag while training for marathons, or simply enjoying a run around town—a familiar and inspiring sight to many.

Services will be held on Monday, February 9, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Coatesville. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m.
