Joseph Menton of Saint James (Nissequogue), New York, passed away peacefully on January 31st, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Born in 1940, Joseph overcame tremendous odds early in life after being raised at the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School—an experience that shaped his resilience, self-reliance, and lifelong belief in discipline and perseverance.
Joseph attended Northwestern University and the University of Pittsburgh and played college football at Northwestern, fostering a lifelong love of the game and a deep respect for teamwork, preparation, and leadership.
He was deeply proud of his service in the United States Marine Corps. During his time in the Marines, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton and in Okinawa. His military service was a defining chapter of his life and a lasting source of honor.
In 1964, Joseph married his beloved wife, Roz Macey. Together, they shared an adventurous life, raising their family and making homes in the Chicago area, the Washington, D.C., and Maryland region; Wexford County, Pennsylvania; and Albuquerque, New Mexico, before ultimately settling on Long Island, where they built lasting roots.
Joseph was a devoted father to Tanya Menton and Sonja Menton-Urrico, as well as to Joseph B. Menton, who predeceased him. He took immense pride in his family and the values they carried forward. He was especially proud of his daughters' successful corporate careers—Tanya in law and Sonja in Learning & Development—viewing their accomplishments as a reflection of the perseverance, integrity, and work ethic he instilled in them.
Athletics remained central to Joseph's life, particularly track and field. He had a deep passion for throwing events, including shot put and discus, and strongly believed in discipline, technique, and the pursuit of mastery. He instilled these values in his children, ensuring each developed both athletic skill and personal confidence. His daughters achieved regional and state recognition in field events—accomplishments that brought him immense pride. Joseph and Roz continued to compete well into adulthood, participating together in track and field competitions, including the Masters Olympics. Their shared dedication to training and competition reflected a lifelong commitment to excellence, partnership, and personal challenge.
Joseph's love of football extended across generations. His son excelled in football at Smithtown East High School and went on to play college football at East Stroudsburg University. That athletic legacy continued with his grandson, who excelled at Mercy High School in Riverhead, New York, and later played collegiate football at Castleton University in Vermont.
Professionally, Joseph held senior leadership roles in operations and logistics at American Furniture, Seaman's Furniture, and P.C. Richard & Son. He was deeply passionate about execution, accountability, and continuous improvement, and was widely respected as an expert in warehousing and distribution technologies. Known for his rigor, problem-solving ability, and insistence on high standards, he led with clarity and integrity, earning the trust of colleagues and teams who valued his judgment, discipline, and steady leadership.
An avid reader, he maintained a deep interest in geopolitics and world affairs. In later years, Joseph and Roz traveled throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, sharing their love of art and jewelry through their business, Roz Menton (rozmenton.com).
He is also lovingly remembered by his grandson, John Urrico, with whom he shared the same birthday, as well as by his son-in-law, Frank Urrico; Tanya's life partner, Scott Barry; and his siblings, Georgine Berent and Harry Menton.
Above all, Joseph will be remembered as "Papa"—a proud Marine, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, a steadfast Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and a man guided by optimism, perseverance, and duty.
