Joseph R. Brillante

1946 - 2026

A decorated Vietnam veteran, attorney, industrialist, and heralded West Point graduate, Joseph R. Brillante, passed away on April 3rd, 2026, at his home in Queens Creek, AZ, at the age of 79, following a recent diagnosis of ALS.

Born in wartorn Manila on Sept 18, 1946, to then Captain Jose R. and Hope Brillante, Joe and his family emigrated to the United States in 1952 to join their father, who was assigned to Ft Campbell, KY. Thereafter, Joe was raised on Army posts in Germany and the United States. As the son of a courageous Philippine Scout, Joe gravitated naturally to West Point, graduating as an Infantry officer with the USMA Class of 1969.

After a tour as a rifle platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division, Joe was selected to lead the Reconnaissance Platoon of a battalion of the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam, where he was decorated for heroism. He was especially proud of never having lost a Soldier. On return, he commanded a battery and taught at the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. In his final Army assignment, he was an instructor at the Northern Warfare Training Center in Alaska.

After six years of commissioned service, Joe left the Army in 1975, managing an air separation plant while attending law school. He subsequently practiced law in California and Washington State. He was also an avid skier and hiker.

In 2000, Joe discovered the passion that dominated his life and became his legacy, that of encouraging young men and women in Washington State to seek appointments to West Point. Over the next 23 years, as the coordinator there for the West Point Admissions Field Force, Joe recruited over 600 exceptionally outstanding cadet candidates, becoming the most successful recruiter nationally for West Point admissions. Among those he mentored were four who became the First Captains of the Corps of Cadets, two Rhodes Scholars, along with many class officers and varsity athletes. His efforts were so successful that he was asked to develop the manual currently in use for the West Point Admissions Field Force. As a result of these outstanding achievements, Joe was recently awarded the Department of the Army Meritorious Public Service Medal.

Beloved and admired by his West Point classmates and the hundreds whose lives he touched in the Pacific Northwest, Joe will be interred in the West Point cemetery at a later date. He is survived by his devoted partner Karlene Quinn, his sister Marie, and a host of cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Army Scholarship Foundation (www.armyscholarshipfoundation.org), where Joe's friends and classmates have established a memorial scholarship in his name.
