Josephine (Verbovsky) Kleinhans Obituary
Josephine A. Kleinhans 95, of Ulysses, PA, died Tuesday, October 14, 2025 in the Sweden Valley Manor facility in Coudersport, Pennsylvania.
Born October 29, 1929 in Cliffside Park, NJ, Josephine was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Sophie Verbovsky. Joseph and Sophie had immigrated from Czechoslovakia, circa 1919, as newlyweds. Their dream was to have all their children born in the United States. This miracle came true 5 times in a house they purchased on 72nd street in North Bergen, NJ. Josephine was to spend most of her life in the NJ area but the final 41 years of her life found her relocating to the Coudersport/Ulysses area of Pennsylvania. Josephine had 2 brothers: Frank & Danny who both served in the United States military during WWII. She also had 2 sisters: Mary & Eleanor. Fluent Czech was often spoken in the 72nd street household. It was their beloved 2nd language. All siblings predeceased Josephine.
Surviving Josephine are 3 children from her first marriage to Theodore K. Scherer: Kenny, Karen & Glenn. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Brian, Jessica, Candi, Dana & Ellie. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren: Tucker, Mason, Gunner, Wyatt, James, Tyler, Madeline, Max & baby Miles.
Josephine's oldest grandchild, Justin Scherer, predeceased her in 1995 at 17 years of age.
After graduating high school Josephine worked in NYC as a bookkeeper. Three years later she became a fulltime homemaker to raise her 3 children with her first husband: Theodore K. Scherer("Ted"). Seventeen years later she again went back into the work force as a jewelry store manager in a prominent NJ dept store. In 1982 Josephine married her 2nd husband: George Kleinhans and relocated to Pennsylvania shortly afterward. Josephine's last role in life was as a Sweden Valley Manor resident and an enthusiastic contributor to their vibrant community.
Josephine was never short of ambition. She was a hardworking woman who persevered through many difficult challenges with courage and hard work. Always a sharp dresser, from her teens to her final hours, Josephine welcomed every day with enthusiasm. This no doubt gave her a long and meaningful life.
Josephine was a devout Roman Catholic. She received all sacraments regularly and died believing that Jesus Christ was her lord and savior. Her ashes will be interred at her place of rest in the the Ulysses cemetery off Route 49 in Ulysses, Pennsylvania.
On Josephine's behalf I would like to thank Sweden Valley Manor for their excellent medical care, compassion & joyful community spirit. This competence allowed Josephine to live out her last days in contentment & happiness.
