Josephine "JoAnn" Merrick passed away peacefully at home on December 8, 2025, surrounded by the love she spent her lifetime giving so freely to others. She is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Jim Merrick, and her cherished daughter, Kate Durham, whom she missed dearly.
Born January 10, 1939, in Dover, Delaware, JoAnn's life was a beautiful reflection of service, faith, and devotion to family. As the eldest of seven, she became a second mother to her six younger siblings — a role she embraced with strength, patience, and unwavering love. That same generous heart carried her into motherhood, where she raised four children.
Later in life, JoAnn extended that nurturing spirit to countless others through her work as a drug and alcohol counselor, helping many people find hope, healing, and a new beginning.
A lifelong Methodist, JoAnn loved the Lord deeply and expressed her faith through joyful service and song. She lifted her voice in many church choirs over the years, and her music, faith, and love continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew her.
JoAnn leaves behind her children Steve, Scott, and Meg; her sisters Barbie and Becky; her brother Benny; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren — each one a living testament to her enduring love and legacy.
Those who knew JoAnn will forever remember her loving, passionate, and wonderfully feisty spirit, her quick smile, and her endless willingness to help anyone in need. Though our hearts ache in her absence, we are grateful beyond words for the life she lived and the love she gave.
A memorial service celebrating JoAnn's life will be held on January 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, Delaware.
Her love remains. Her song continues. And her legacy lives on in all of us.
