Julia Tait Blue died December 29, 2025 after a short illness. She was born on February 21, 1947 in Cumberland, Maryland to John Rinehart Blue and Madeline McDowell Blue and raised in Romney, West Virginia.
Julia discovered a love of veterinary medicine at an early age, when she and her father frequently accompanied the local veterinarian on his rounds. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University in 1971 and her PhD in veterinary clinical pathology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981. Julia was on the faculty of Cornell University for over a decade as a Professor of Veterinary Medicine.
During her tenure at Cornell, Julia married Jim Zimmer. They divorced in 2000. She married Donald Weir in October of 2006. Julia and Don moved to Tampa, FL, where they lived for more than 20 years. Julia retired from private veterinary practice at Blue Pearl Pet Hospital in Florida in 2013.
Julia is survived by her husband Don, her niece Catherine Blue Holmes, her sister-in-law Elizabeth Blue, and her stepsons, Geoffrey and Robert Weir. She is preceded in death by her father, her mother, and her two brothers, John and David Blue.
Julia will be remembered with admiration for her incredible drive, her strong moral compass, her loyalty to family, and her gift for storytelling. She is loved and she will be missed.
