Julie Aarons-Amon passed away on February 15 following complications from pneumonia. She was 84.
Born in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1941, just seven days before Pearl Harbor, Julie was the daughter of John Rodney Bartow and June Lee Hyatt. In 1943, she and her mother moved to California to join her father, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. Julie spent her youth in the San Fernando Valley with her parents and beloved brother, Jay, later welcoming step-siblings Dick and Joy Olson into her extended family.
In 1960, Julie left California to begin a glamorous career as a flight attendant with United Airlines. After training in Chicago, she was based in Washington, D.C., traveling extensively along the East Coast. A natural beauty and hopeless romantic, she had a gift for charming athletes and musicians of note, living a jet-set lifestyle full of fun and adventure.
In 1964, she married Frank Morgan and moved to the Boston area, where she lived for the next ten years. There she worked as a secretary in the burgeoning high-tech industry, attended Northeastern University part time, and worked as a cocktail waitress in a downtown jazz club. A former "Valley Girl," Julie fell completely in love with New England, its culture, its music, and especially its sports teams. She remained a devoted fan of the New England Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox throughout her life, especially the Patriots.
Returning to Southern California in 1974, Julie began a long and successful career in advertising, first with an agency and later as a media sales professional in radio and outdoor advertising. In the early 70s, she married Albert Aarons (father of Asa), and later Mohammad Amon (father of Maureen) in the early 80s, building a life and a blended family that reflected her generous and open heart. She retired in 2008 but continued to take on occasional research projects from home.
Julie was a proud two-time cancer survivor of more than 40 years. Though arthritis and COPD later limited her physical activity, her resilience and spirit remained strong. Julie was an adopter of both people and pets, a nurturing and supportive mom to all of them, whether by blood, marriage, or four paws. Among her most beloved companions were her Doberman, Fritzie, and calico cat, Meekee, and over the years she shared her home with dogs large and small, many cats, and even a horse owned by her accomplished equestrian daughter.
Julie is survived by cherished family members including: daughter and son-in-law Maureen (Amon) Ouweleen and Aaron Ouweleen, granddaughter Lauren Ouweleen, son Asa Aarons, nieces and nephews Ann (Bartow) Inman, Paul Bartow, Heather Gillespie, Dain and Sylvia Olson, and step-brother Dick Olson. She was predeceased by her parents, June and Rodney, her brother, the Rev. Jay Bartow, and step-sister Joy Gillespie.
Julie loved gardening and home improvement projects developed over 40 years of homeownership. An avid reader of mysteries, thrillers, and historical fiction, she also loved cinema of all genres, from the silent era to modern blockbusters. She faithfully watched Jeopardy and enjoyed PBS programming, biographies, nature and history documentaries. Sports were her favorite form of "reality television," and she proudly ignored the rest.
After decades of maintaining a home, Julie savored several carefree years at Westminster Gardens, where she enjoyed community, friendship, and freedom from leaky faucets.
Julie lived the way she loved, fully, on her own terms, with fierce loyalty to the people, teams, and pets she claimed as her own.
