Beloved brother, uncle, grand uncle, and friend, Julien Claude Mathieu, passed away peacefully at the age of 71 on the morning of October 23, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Julien was born to Daniel Mathieu and Rollande (Lecours) Mathieu in Waterbury, CT. From a very young age, he was an avid athlete who enjoyed motorcycling, tennis, water skiing, hang gliding, hunting, fishing, gardening, and especially snow skiing. He was a certified and skilled ski instructor who shared his love of skiing with all his students, and he inspired many people while teaching in North Carolina, Connecticut, and Vermont. He was also a world traveler who enjoyed exploring new cultures, cuisines, and destinations.
Julien earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Vermont and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing at the University of Connecticut. As an engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur, he was always seeking to improve processes, materials, and products for the greater good of humanity.
Julien held 16 product and process patents and had many business endeavors. His most successful endeavor was Glorious Outdoors LLC, where he brought to market the shovel his father Daniel had patented. This unique shovel, named “The Spearhead Spade”, allowed people who had difficulty using regular shovels to be able to enjoy their gardens with ease.
Julien loved and cherished his family and friends and was a person who energized and motivated everyone around him. He was well-known for his infectious laugh, sense of humor, and lively personality. He enjoyed being mentally and physically challenged in all areas of his life, and he encouraged others to live the same way. He was a kind and generous person who was loved, respected, and admired by his many friends, business acquaintances, and family members. May the grace of God bless him and the people he touched throughout his life.
Julien is predeceased by his parents Daniel and Rollande. He is survived by his siblings Lise Veronneau of South Burlington, VT and her husband David, Gaitan Mathieu of Underhill, VT and his wife Genevieve, Donald Mathieu of Danville, NH and his wife Judi, Kathleen Rogan of Vernon, CT and her husband Peter, and Karen Smith of Charlotte, NC and her husband Eric. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial and celebration of life will be held at a time and location to be announced.
In lieu of sending flowers, Julien would have been honored if you planted some flowers for yourself in memory of him. You can even use a Spearhead Spade to plant them if you wish!
