June Lewers Terry, 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Easton, Maryland, on March 26, 2026. Born on March 31, 1942, in Salisbury, Maryland, she was the daughter of Guilette and Iva (Calloway) Lewers.
June was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James H. Terry, in 2011, after 25 years of marriage marked by deep affection, mutual respect, and far more laughter than tears. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ted Lewers.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Rebecca (Mark) Williford of Arizona; her grandsons, Mark Williford and his wife, Hannah, and Daniel Williford and his wife, Paige; her sister-in-law, Pat Lewers; and her nieces, Debbie Lewers, Linda Rajacich, Kim D'Amico, and their families.
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Wheaton College in Illinois, June devoted ten years to missionary work at a hospital in the Republic of South Africa, where she trained Zulu women to become nurses. She later received a Master's degree in Biblical Studies from Trinity Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. While completing a teaching fellowship in New Testament Greek at Trinity, she met Jim Terry and his first wife, Carol, who passed away in 1985. June and Jim were married in 1986.
June played a steadfast and supportive role as Jim completed his Doctor of Education in Higher Education. Together, they taught and served in administrative and faculty roles at Christian colleges and seminaries in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Canada. Later, while Jim served at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, June worked as a nursing home social worker and served as a commissioned lay chaplain through their church. Whatever the job description, Jim was sought out for help with computers, and June, for just the right word or grammar for written pieces.
In retirement, June became deeply involved in the Episcopal Church through the Companions of the Holy Cross, a fellowship of 900 women across the United States, and through Forward Movement, which published her meditations for several years. She continued writing for friends and found great joy in sustaining meaningful relationships.
June delighted in music, humor, books, dictionaries, libraries, the Atlantic Ocean and its shores, as well as trees, birds, and even their discarded feathers. Over her lifetime, she cared for ten dogs—especially Golden Retrievers—and always had a fondness for "just one more" Thrasher's french fry.
Following Jim's passing, June moved to Londonderry Retirement Community in Easton. There, she found great joy in singing with the choir at Trinity Cathedral, including participating in "Summer Sings", a program of Allegro Academy. Trinity's choir members were an extended family to June and she cherished the years she had with this amazing group of people. She expected death to be like flipping a page of music, suddenly finding herself in a joyous choir of countless blended voices, full of praise.
A funeral service will be held on May 30 at 11:00 at Trinity Cathedral in Easton, Maryland. Family and friends will gather to mourn her loss and to celebrate a life sustained by grace, faith, humor, and love.
Burial will take place at St. Columba's Chapel in Middletown, Rhode Island, where the headstone she shares with Jim reads: "Singing unto God a glad song."
Memorial contributions may be made to Allegro Academy in Easton, Maryland, or to the Companions of the Holy Cross in Byfield, Massachusetts.
