Kandis Lynn Franey

1948 - 2026

Kandis Franey née Mendonsa, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, in Sacramento surrounded by her family, after a brave three-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Kandis was born in Sacramento on January 22, 1948, to Manuel and Monna Mendonsa. Kandis lived in Sacramento for 74 of her 78 years and had deep roots. She dearly loved her family and friends. She was a wonderful and very devoted mother to Gretchen, Heather, Tim, and Josh and Nana to her grandchildren David, Devyn, Ryan, Scott, Aidan, Delaney, Staci, and Madison. She was a wonderful sister to Randy, Scott, Debbie, and Karen. Kandis was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Harry Franey.

Kandis was a beautiful soul who was very well known for making amazing cakes and cookies for everyone she loved. Her sugar cookies and gingerbread houses were absolutely unbelievable. She loved creating traditions for her family and made every celebration special. She loved creating memories. She masterfully constructed many special items for her grandchildren, making every Halloween more special than the last by creating movie-quality professional costumes. The birthday cakes she made for her grandchildren were more spectacular than any professional. For her friends and adult family, she loved having dinner parties with all the special wares. For her granddaughter, she hosted an exquisite tea party. She seldom sat because she was happiest doting on her guests and all the final touches. She planned wonderful vacations with her grandchildren and often spared no expense. The inside joke was that she always asked for a different room or different table. The truth is, she just wanted everything to be magical. These events, however, were much more than dinner parties, vacations, costumes, cakes, and cookies. They were her heart and they were her love. Whether she was your wife, Mom, Nana, sister, aunt, cousin, or friend, you always knew she loved you deeply.

Kandis was highly successful in her professional life and retired as Executive Staff CEA, Veterans Affairs from the State of California with 31 years of service. She was proud of her career and always loved a good conversation about building prisons or bonds. She developed many strong friendships with those who started out as colleagues.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 25th, at 1:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 9539 Racquet Ct, Elk Grove, CA 95758. Kandis will be celebrated as well as her husband, Harry Franey. Following the funeral, the family will host an open house with light refreshments in the home of Gretchen and Tim.
