Karen Jean Harris, 75, of Laurel, MD passed away at home on March 2, 2026 following a sudden illness. Karen was born in Washington, DC on May 6, 1950 to Jean (Deener) Harris and Samuel Harris. She remained local where she grew up in Adelphi. She attended the University of Maryland receiving both her undergraduate and master's degrees. Karen dedicated her entire career to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, where she worked in textiles and fabrics.
Karen had a deep appreciation for beauty and history that extended well beyond her career. She loved to travel, especially making frequent trips to New York City to attend Broadway shows. She had a passion for antiques, art, and theater, and found great joy in surrounding herself with meaningful and unique pieces. Karen also delighted in decorating her home for the holidays, creating warm and festive spaces for those she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Samuel Harris; her brothers, Steven and Jonathan; and her longtime companion, Nathaniel Jones.
Karen is survived by her nephews: Ryan (Nicole) Harris, Christopher (Michael) Harris, and Joseph Harris; her great-nephews, Chase Harris and Adam Harris; her great-niece, Hazel Harris; and Nathaniel's son, Nathaniel "Sluggo" Jones.
A celebration of Karen's life will be held on April 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Laurel Maryland. 7607 Old Sandy Spring Road, Laurel MD 20707.
