Karen Jean Nye

Karen Jean Nye, of Aumsville, Oregon, aged 80, passed away on March 11, 2026. Born on April 15, 1945, she spent her early years in Salem, Oregon, where she graduated from South Salem High School. She devoted many years to the Cascade School District, working in various capacities at Aumsville and Turner Elementary Schools in the Special Education department before retiring as the Cook Manager from Turner Elementary in 2003.

Karen was a woman of diverse interests and passions. She cherished traveling, having explored destinations across Europe and the U.S. but treasured, more than any, spending time on the Oregon Coast and Hawaii. A social butterfly, Karen enjoyed dining out and gathering with her friends, as well as sewing and watching movies. Her culinary skills were renowned, making her a beloved figure not only among the students but also the staff and visitors who were fortunate to taste her cooking.

Karen's spiritual life was vibrant and full, with active participation in several Salem area churches over the years, including The People’s Church, Salem Evangelical Church, Christian Center, Lancaster Bible Church and Calvary Baptist Church, where she and her husband Gary were married in 1965.

Karen leaves behind a loving family: her husband, Gary; sons, Mark (Linda), Jonathan (Rachelle), and Daniel (Liisa); and her cherished grandchildren, Emily, Brandon, Tim, Hailey, Claire, Luke, and Onni. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Jean Sorensen, and her sisters, Linda and LeAnne.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life to honor Karen's memory, with details to be announced soon.
