Karen Catherine Conner Twitchell, 74, passed away on
February 25th, 2025 at her home in Dawsonville, Georgia.
Karen was born in April 1950. Her family moved from Albany, New York to Coral Gables, Florida when she was very young. She attended Coral Gables High School and went on to study at the University of Florida. At U of F, Karen joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and met her future husband, Russell T. "Ted" Twitchell of Vero Beach, Florida.
She graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in education and moved to Vero Beach, Florida where she taught at Vero Beach Senior High School for 36 years. Her husband, Ted, joined the Vero Beach Police Department. Throughout her long career, Karen served as a librarian, cheerleading coach, World History teacher, and President of the Indian River Education Association.
Karen was an excellent teacher, advocate, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was known for her moral courage and commitment to excellence as well as her love of travel, education, and the arts. She was kind, compassionate, and exceedingly stylish. She also loved animals, took tremendous care of her pets, and supported the Dawson County Humane Society's no kill shelter.
Karen was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Eva Conner, and her sister, Lorraine Conner. She is survived by her husband, Russell "Ted" Twitchell, sister, Mary Ann Conner, daughter, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Andrea Twitchell So, and son-in-law, Colonel (Ret) Nelson So. She loved and cared for her three granddaughters, Vivian, Catherine, and Ingrid. Her strong work ethic, unwavering integrity, and sharp intellect have been handed down to them.
The family held a small, private memorial ceremony. Anyone who wishes to honor Karen's memory is encouraged to make a donation to the Dawson County Humane Society.
