Karin Janin Peterson-Sitrin, 79, of Marlboro, NY, passed away peacefully in the quiet early hours of Monday, March 30, 2026, at Ivy Lodge in Saugerties. Her life was a luminous tapestry of resilience, creativity, and profound inspiration.
Born on June 2, 1946, in Ansbach, Germany, Karin's earliest years were marked by the hardships of a post-war orphan navigating scarcity, illness, and the ache of feeling unloved. Yet, her life took the turn of a true "Cinderella story" when, at age four, she was adopted by an American family living in Caracas, Venezuela. This new chapter led her to Texas, where her journey of survival blossomed into a life of purpose. It was there that the healing power and lifelong bond with her cherished childhood horse Baby would begin, and where she would eventually find her greatest joy in the blessing of her own children. Karin's story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the beauty that can emerge from the most difficult beginnings.
Karin was a true visionary, defined by a lifelong pursuit of self-discovery and a spirit ahead of her time. A pioneer who embraced the "work from home" movement as early as the 1980s, she lived a life that constantly defied expectations. At 51, she proved that dreams have no expiration date by earning her Bachelor's in Psychology from St. Edward's University in Austin, TX, a pivotal moment that inspired her three children and remains a profound reminder that anything is possible. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, she continued her academic journey through a Master's degree and into PhD candidacy.
She beautifully interlaced her creative talents with a profound heart for service, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she touched. As a gifted photographer and web designer, she possessed a rare ability to capture the spirit of her beloved horses, Wisdom and Lady Grace, translating their quiet beauty into visual stories. Beyond her artistry, Karin dedicated her life to helping others navigate their own journeys. As a life coach, grief counselor, and the insightful author of Imagine That... and Magic of Intention, she provided a roadmap for those seeking inner peace and purpose. She was truly a "force for good" in the world, founding The Orphan Connection to honor and empower orphans making a difference, and providing visionary leadership as the Director of the Mid-Hudson Women's Network.
Karin was a beacon of warmth who never met a stranger, dedicating her life to the simple, profound acts of loving people and rescuing animals. After a serendipitous meeting on an airplane over two decades ago, she cultivated a wonderful life in the countryside of New York with her devoted husband, the man who would stand by her side until the end of her time. We will deeply miss her playful silly charm, the music that filled her days, and the radiant smile that could light up any room. As we reflect on her legacy, her empowering philosophy continues to guide us: stay grounded in the present, understand your obstacles, create a thoughtful plan, and above all else, always move forward.
Karin is survived by her adoring husband, Sherman, who shared in the beautiful life they built together in New York. Her legacy of love and resilience lives on through her three children, Kristin, Robby, and Kari, as well as her siblings, Bob and Diana. She is also remembered with deep affection by her daughter-in-law, Leisha, and her sons-in-law, Kendall and Russell. The light of her spirit shines most brightly in the hearts of her many grandchildren: Cameron, Carson, Breckin, Caden, Aubryn, Gracyn, Addisyn, and Blakely. Each of them carries a part of her wisdom and warmth, ensuring her memory will forever be a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately. In a final act of peace, Karin will be laid to rest in the countryside she loved, alongside her cherished horse, Wisdom.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to honor Karin's journey and her visionary spirit. Contributions will support the
Alzheimer's Association, funding vital research and providing a roadmap for families navigating the path Karin and her loved ones walked with such grace. A link to the
