Mrs. Kathleen "Kathi" Louise Bernard (née Cortrite), age 79, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, in Tacoma, Washington. Born on December 18, 1946, in Santa Monica, California, Kathi lived a life deeply rooted in faith, love, and devotion to her family and the Lord.
Kathi graduated from Reseda High School in 1964 and later pursued higher education at Allan Hancock College, earning an Associate of Science degree in Medical Billing along with several professional certificates. Her commitment to learning and perseverance were defining aspects of her life.
A woman of profound faith, Kathi's spiritual journey began at True Vine Ministries, where she grew spiritually alongside her beloved mother-in-law, Mother Bernard. She dedicated herself to teaching Sunday school, working with the youth ministry, and serving through music. In 2016, she became a member of Grace Gospel Service at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), where she found a cherished church family that supported her and her daughter Kels through challenging times. Even as her health declined in later years, Kathi remained steadfast in her faith—attending services online and sharing God's goodness with those around her. She truly embodied the spirit of a good and faithful servant.
Kathi's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her daughter Kels Bernard (and spouse Thomas) and grandchildren Kassidi (and spouse Delron), Cameron (and spouse Saizha), Kelsi, and Kavani; as well as great-grandchildren NaMari, Avaia, Ru'mani, Amaya, Haylen, and Imani—affectionately known as "GiGi's Babies."

She has been reunited in eternal rest with her parents Adelbert A. Cortrite Jr. and Constance Cortrite; parents-in-law Flo Bernard and Reginald A. Bernard Sr.; brother-in-law Ronald Bernard; as well as beloved grandchildren Joshua Ke'nai-Cortrite, J'siah Keanu-CaMari (2006), Jersei Kai'lani-Caeli (2012), and DaMarcus Anthoni-Matthew (2022). Their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
Kathi's passions reflected the vibrancy of her spirit. She found joy in cooking delicious meals for loved ones, baking treats like her famous chocolate chip cookies, coloring intricate designs that showcased her creativity, solving crossword puzzles with precision, and cheering for the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Lakers—especially as an avid fan of Kobe Bryant. She delighted in supporting her children's and grandchildren's activities across sports or any endeavor they pursued. Her home was always filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals.
Known for her strong Christian values, honesty, kindness, generosity, and fierce love for family, Kathi had a unique ability to form lifelong friendships with those who shared her values. A quiet yet witty woman with a take-no-nonsense attitude, she was the heart of her family—loving deeply and speaking proudly of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her strength left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Kathleen "Kathi" Louise Bernard will be remembered for her unwavering faithfulness to God, boundless love for family, and devotion to others. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. May she rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord.
