Kathleen Burney, a devoted child of the Most High God, entered her eternal rest surrounded by the love of her family and the unwavering presence of the Lord on November 30, 2025. Her journey was marked by her deep faith—faith in a God who kept her, protected her, opened closed doors, and guided her steps with grace and mercy even when the road grew difficult. Her greatest joy came from reading the Bible, embracing all things spiritual, praising the Lord, and filling her days with music that lifted her spirit.
Kathleen was born in Jackson (Bemis) TN, to Future and Jessie Mercer on July 15,1949 and grew up in a family rich with love and many cherished siblings, several of whom have been called home prior to her. She carried their memory with her always.
She was profoundly proud of her precious children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and who, in return, blessed her life beyond measure. She held a special place in her heart for her children which include Ralph Burney (Mary Emery), Darrell "Ken" Burney (Tonia Burney), Vincent Burney and Tosha Starks.
A woman of service, Kathleen dedicated her life to helping others. She spent many meaningful years working in hospitals and the community, offering compassion and support wherever she could. Her work included Behavioral Medicine at Methodist Hospital, NAMI, Gary CIT, and ministries of music at Centennial United Methodist Church, Mount Horeb Male Chorus, and many other places whenever she was needed.
Kathleen also leaves behind her siblings Virginia Mercer, Thomas Mercer and the rest of her late siblings, whom she also loved dearly as well. There are several close niece's nephew's aunts and uncles whom she held dear to her.
She was blessed with treasured friendships, some which include Alice Williams, her best friend of over 40 years and by the love of her goddaughters Junie, Annette, Sylvia, and many other wonderful families the Lord placed in her life. She also leaves behind Melvin, whom she loved and adored.
Kathleen believed wholeheartedly in worshiping God "in spirit and in truth," walking by faith and not by sight. She lived by the conviction that the Spirit is felt deeply, and that blessings follow those who remain steadfast in the Lord. Her life was a testimony to this truth.
As Jesus promised in Matthew 28, Kathleen now rests in the everlasting assurance of His words: "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end."
May her faith-filled legacy continue to shine in all who knew and loved her.
