Kathleen Kyne Loveland, a vibrant, adventurous, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family on December 31, 2025, after a battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Kathleen was born on November 8, 1959, in Washington, DC, and grew up in Cabin John, Maryland, with her Irish parents, Kathleen and Patrick Kyne, and siblings, Mary, Theresa, Patrick and Elizabeth.
Kathleen graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Her patient nature and love for children led her to her true calling – teaching children with learning disabilities. Throughout her teaching career, she taught at Clara Barton and Bannockburn Nursery School in Maryland, and Trident Academy, in Mount Pleasant, SC. She was a gifted teacher who took pride in her students and kept in touch with them long after they left her classroom.
Kathleen’s proudest accomplishment was raising her two daughters, Kate and Tara, and seeing them both start their own families. A loving grandmother, or “Meme”, she is survived by four grandchildren: Grant, Gray, George, and Forrest. She adored being a grandmother, and radiated joy whenever she was with her grandchildren.
Kathleen’s maternal instincts extended well beyond her family. Friends of her daughters considered her to be a second mother, and she even opened her home to two children through an exchange program with Belarus in 1996.
Kathleen had the ability to make people feel special and loved, especially her children and grandchildren. She was quick to send a care package or handwritten card to anyone in need of a pick-me-up, and one of her favorite phrases was “you go, girl!” She would spend hours before holidays and birthdays making crafts and decorations, inventing games, and baking homemade cakes (especially her famous “dirt cake”).
Kathleen celebrated minor occasions and major holidays with equal joy, but her favorite was St. Patrick’s Day. Fiercely proud of her Irish heritage, she named her younger daughter after the Hill of Tara in Ireland, and was known to fly an “Erin go Bragh,” (“Ireland forever”) flag outside her Mount Pleasant, SC home.
Kathleen had a wide circle of old and new friends with whom she adored spending time, but she was just as happy to spend a Friday night at home with her husband, David, cooking and dancing in the kitchen to a Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole song.
Kathleen shared her husband’s sense of adventure and love for hiking and camping. She helped run the Charleston: Hiking, Travel and Adventure Club and led trips to Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and Spain. She cared deeply about protecting the environment, advocating for women’s rights, and was strong in her religious faith.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, David; her two daughters, Kate and Tara; her sons-in-law Matthew and Sean; her four grandchildren, Forrest, George, Grant, and Gray; and her mother, Kathleen Kyne.
Kathleen will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A religious service and celebration of life will be held for Kathleen in the coming months; details will be shared soon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) or another group that supports research for neurodegenerative diseases.
