Kathryn "Kay" Newell, 79, formerly of Arlington Heights and most recently a resident of Roselle, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, after a decades long survival from breast cancer. Born on June 1, 1946, in Evanston, Illinois, Kay was the beloved daughter of the late Ann (nee Left) and Russell Rink.
Family was at the heart of Kay’s world. She was the devoted wife of Larry Newell and cherished mother to Karen (Amy Jo Behal) Larson and Kellie (Chuck) Bianchi. Kay took immense pride in her role as grandmother to Mark Bianchi, Evan Larson-Behal, and Scott Bianchi. She was a loving sister to Maureen Rink and the late Robert (Mary Lou) Rink. Kay also held a special place in the lives of her nieces and nephews as their aunt.
Kay’s professional life was marked by her dedication and organizational talent. She began her career as a convention coordinator for International Connection before moving into administration with SEAL. Her sociability, attention to detail and work ethic left a lasting impression on so many.
Kay’s zest for life shone through in her many interests and passions. Kay found joy in crocheting for loved ones, especially blankets for her grandsons in their younger years. A lifelong supporter of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, she passionately followed her favorite teams through every season. Bowling was both a personal passion and an avenue for building enduring friendships—she was not only an avid bowler and league president for many years, but also coached children with patience and enthusiasm. Dancing with Larry brought Kay particular happiness throughout their years together—a testament to their enduring partnership and shared joy in life’s simple pleasures. Her unwavering support for her daughters and grandsons was evident in every aspect of her life; she celebrated their achievements and milestones with genuine pride. She enjoyed reading, traveling with family, spending time at the casino and sharing dinners with family and friends.
Kay possessed an extraordinary ability to connect with people—her natural charisma and warmth made everyone feel welcome, whether she was meeting someone new or socializing with family and friends. Her gift for engaging others left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Kay’s legacy is one of connection, kindness, and spirited engagement with the world around her. Her memory will be cherished by all whose lives she touched.
