Kelan Barry Thomas died unexpectedly on October 14, 2025, at the age of 69 at her home in Pasadena, CA.
Kelan is survived by her three children: Matthew, Gabrielle, and Christopher, as well as her sister Katy McCollum and her brother Kevin Barry.
Kelan was born September 10, 1956 in Los Angeles California to Theodore Martin Barry and Mary Ann Barry (Dillon). She grew up in La Canada and attended Mayfield Junior and Senior School in Pasadena. She attended Swarthmore College and graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. While studying in Boston, Kelan met the love of her life, Mark Trevillyan Thomas, and there they raised their three children.
Kelan (or Kel, to those who had the privilege of knowing her) was a true original. Her brilliance was matched only by the size of her open heart which, paired with her glamorous "Old Hollywood" charm, saved a seat for anyone. Kel had friends in places near and far. To know her was to know wonderful conversation, true connection and a wicked sense of humor. She truly loved people above all else, and even if you only met her in passing, her radiance was sure to rub off on you, both because she could spin an unforgettable yarn and truly listen, truly want to know anybody she crossed paths with. Her interest in people not only made her the life of any party but also extended to her close work with hospitals in the Boston area. With the loss of Kelan, the sky is a shade darker, the world a little less humorous, but her light was such that it can never truly be diminished, and never fully switched off because Kel had never heard of an "off switch", certainly not in life and, it's safe to assume, not in death either. She was a true believer in her Catholic faith, and we can all take comfort in knowing she is somewhere up high, shining that light on all of us, day or night. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family will be holding a celebration of her life at St. Bede the Venerable Church in Lacañada Flintridge on the 13th of December at 9:30 AM. If you were lucky enough to be in her wild orbit, please join us in wishing her a peaceful passage.
