Kenneth Louis Oberts

1937 - 2026

Kenneth Louis Oberts, 88, of Southfield, MI, passed away on March 17, 2026 just shy of his 89th birthday. Born on March 22, 1937, to Anthony and Phyllis Oberts, Ken grew up attending St. Luke's Catholic School and then Cass Tech High School, later earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Lawrence Institute of Technology.

Ken, affectionately known as the $2 Man, was celebrated for his kind and humorous spirit. He cherished making people laugh, whether in person or over the phone, often reminding women to "Stay Pretty". His jovial nature was a beacon of joy for all who knew him.

In his youth, Ken served in the United States Army National Guard from 1958 until he was honorably discharged on July 31, 1963. He embarked on a diverse career, initially working for automotive companies before transitioning into sales at MidWest Paper. Eventually, he founded K. L. Oberts Paper, Packaging, & Supplies, where he applied his engineering skills and entrepreneurial spirit.

Ken spent many summers at his beloved summer home in Caseville, Michigan, dubbed "Camp Cindy's". He enjoyed boating on Saginaw Bay aboard "The Great Papa" and cherished times spent fishing with his children and grandchildren. An avid gardener alongside his wife, Cynthia, they loved tending to their flower beds and attracting wildlife. Ken also enjoyed being a Table of Wisdom member of the round table at Walt's Diner. He was also known for his collection of tools and his fondness for Handy Man and Reader's Digest magazines, often sharing stories and jokes from the latter.

Ken is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Donna Bonnici and Tammy Chappel (Eric); son, Jeffrey Oberts; grandchildren, Nicholas Sosnowski (Valerie), Kevin Sosnowski, Kenny Sosnowski (Sara), Lydia Chappel-Moore (Maggie), and Tessa Heath (Bryson); great-grandsons, Gavin and Jonah Sosnowski; and siblings, Marilyn St John, Donald Oberts, Thomas Oberts (Chris), and Christine Soleau (Marvin). He was preceded in death by his parents, son Kevin John Oberts, grandson Naythan Bowers, and his beloved wife of 67 years, Cynthia.

A Celebration of Life for Ken and Cynthia will be held in Michigan in May. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greater Humane Society of Michigan. Ken's legacy of laughter and kindness will be cherished and remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
