Kirk Alan Maust, age 64, passed away on February 15, 2026, in Largo, Florida.
Born on May 6, 1961, in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, Kirk lived a life defined by visionary innovation and an unwavering belief in building a better future. A pioneer in renewable energy, he devoted his career to advancing solar technology long before it became mainstream, leaving a lasting mark on his community and the world.
Kirk’s path began in Scottdale and led him to The Pennsylvania State University, where he studied in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering program, recognized as one of the most prestigious engineering programs in North America.
In 1981, he earned one of the nation’s first degrees in solar and renewable technology, graduating as part of Penn State’s first class in solar energy engineering. Even early on, Kirk distinguished himself through his forward-thinking spirit and deep commitment to sustainable solutions.
In 1986, Kirk co-founded Solar Direct in Sarasota, Florida, alongside his longtime business partner, Dale Gulden. Together, they established what would become the first and longest-standing solar company in Florida.
Combining Kirk’s expertise in engineering and computer science with Dale’s extensive experience in marketing and sales, the two built a strong and innovative partnership that helped shape the company’s foundation and long-term success.
Throughout his career at Solar Direct, Kirk held many vital leadership positions, including Senior Engineer, Director of Engineering, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. His deep technical knowledge, strategic insight, groundbreaking innovation, and steady leadership helped guide the company through decades of growth and advancement in the renewable energy industry.
In later years, Kirk assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer, following Dale’s tenure in that position, and continued leading Solar Direct with the same passion and visionary dedication that defined his life’s work. Under his leadership, Solar Direct expanded its reach, bringing renewable energy solutions to homes and businesses across Florida, throughout the nation, and around the world.
Kirk’s innovative mindset extended beyond engineering. In 1995, he constructed and launched SolarDirect.com, one of the earliest and most comprehensive renewable energy websites. He also developed the company’s first electronic shopping cart, the Energy SuperMarket, the first e-commerce platform, which dramatically increased revenues and expanded distribution first nationally and then globally. His foresight in embracing technology helped position Solar Direct as a leader in both renewable energy and online commerce. Kirk also engineered and installed large commercial projects in Europe and Africa, with several being for the US Government.
While Kirk’s professional accomplishments were remarkable, family was always important to him. He is lovingly remembered by his brother, Keith D. Maust; sister-in-law, Cheryl Maust; nieces Devin Billeck and Laura Maust; nephews Dustin Maust and Dylin Maust; great-nieces Riley Pittenger, Isabella Billeck, Emma Billeck, and Mia Maust; great-nephews Zade Burnap, William Maust, and Silas Maust; Aunt Vonnie & Uncle Larry Millslagle; Aunt Betty Maust; and many cousins, including Lisa Pawlikowski who was there by his side for long visits over his last few weeks. They shared many laughs (and eye rolls) and he was very grateful for the time they had together. Kirk’s warmth, loyalty, and steadfast support were gifts that those closest to him will cherish always.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry “Tudd” Maust, Jr. (1983); his mother, Jean (Firestone) Maust Rodgers (2018); and his brother, Kent E. Maust (1994). Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Beyond his work and family, Kirk embraced life with joy and enthusiasm. He had a deep love for live music and dancing and was highly skilled in many dance genres, which he pursued with energy and pride.
Among his memorable achievements were earning 1st Place in the Bronze Division at the Triple Crown Dance Sport Championship at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota on August 1, 2012, and performing with “Team Awesome” at a dance showcase at the Sarasota Opera House in October 2010. Whether at a concert or on the dance floor, Kirk brought light, rhythm, and celebration wherever he went.
Kirk Alan Maust leaves behind a legacy defined by innovation, perseverance, devotion to family, and a vibrant zest for life. His life’s work helped move the world toward cleaner energy, but his greatest impact was the inspiration he offered through his brilliance, generosity, and spirited presence. May his memory bring comfort and strength to all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to sincerely thank Manatee Memorial ICU staff for his care during his short time there, and especially the ICU staff at Largo Medical Center. He spoke very highly of the care he received and we greatly appreciate you.
