Larry Wayne Bunch, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away in Avenal, California, where he lived for many years. Born in Tulare County on January 30, 1941, Larry was the son of Stella Bunch (Hunsaker) and Wayne Bunch, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his siblings Henry Bunch and Marilyn Messer; his nephews David Bunch and Marc Messer; his brothers-in-law Ron Augusto, Norman Messer, and Dale Costa; his sister-in-law Margie Rocha; and his in-laws Alton and Phyllis Costa.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of more than 43 years, Mary Bunch (Costa). He leaves behind his daughter Heather Pope and her husband Brian of Clovis, CA; his son Matt Bunch of West Sacramento, CA; and his stepdaughter Aaron Hudgens (Crowder) of Madera, CA. He was preceded in death by his stepson Chris Crowder. Larry was a proud grandfather to Pierce and Britta Pope and cherished his many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family. In recent months, he found great joy in spending time with his grandniece, Olivia Dominguez.
A graduate of Coalinga High School and Coalinga College, Larry served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His life was defined by service—to his family, his community, and his country. He volunteered at countless school and community events, served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, and worked at the Avenal Post Office for more than 40 years. Larry also served multiple terms on the Reef-Sunset Unified School District Board of Trustees and was a member of the local Masonic Lodge until its closure in the 1980s. For decades, he was a familiar and friendly face in Avenal.
Larry loved to share a joke, especially about the age difference with his wife, and he never missed an opportunity to brag about his children and grandchildren. Last year, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by traveling to Washington, D.C., with the Central Valley Honor Flight—a trip that meant the world to him.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Coalinga, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Central Valley Honor Flight so that more veterans can experience this incredible journey, or to a charity of your choice.
