Larry Matthew Fitzgerald, age 81, born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 28, 1944, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and William Fitzgerald, and his siblings, Michael Fitzgerald and Diane Hancock. Larry came from a family with a strong tradition of military service—his father served honorably in the military, and Larry and his brother also served during the Vietnam era in the late 1960s. While he answered that call, Larry believed profoundly that war was never the answer. Instead, he devoted his life to nurturing, teaching, and caring for others, living his principles of love, compassion, and justice through every action.
Larry attended Arsenal Technical High School before continuing his education at Indiana University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later earned a master’s degree from Butler University and completed additional graduate coursework toward a Juris Doctor. Education was both a calling and a lifelong passion for Larry, shaping his work and his unwavering belief in the potential of every person.
Following his formal educational career, Larry founded his own housing business, Shrum Housing, through which he lived out his deep commitment to service. The work was never just about housing—it was about dignity and helping people find an affordable place to call home.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Debbie Teschendorf and sister-in-law Vicki Fitzgerald; his brother-in-law, Doug Hancock; his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews; his chosen family of dear friends; and his soul and life partner of 44 years, Todd Foushee. Together, Larry and Todd built a life grounded in joy, trust, and unwavering partnership—one that reflected the depth of their love and shared values.
Larry’s faith was central to his life. A longtime member of Unity of Indianapolis, he found deep inspiration and belonging in his spiritual home and expressed that faith through countless quiet acts of love and generosity.
Larry’s love for children was extraordinary. Through his work in special education, leading Sunday School, and volunteering at numerous daycares, he nurtured young lives and saw the good in every child.
Equally defining was Larry’s compassion for anyone in need. He lived his faith through action, embracing all people as children of God, deserving of dignity and care. Whether helping someone find shelter, supporting education, or discreetly placing money into the hand of someone struggling, Larry gave unconditionally. His generosity, grace, and empathy touched countless lives and remain his enduring legacy.
Larry also found great joy in tending his gardens, caring for the Earth with the same attentiveness he offered the people in his life, and nurturing his heart by finding peace through silent meditation.
In accordance with his wishes, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unity of Indianapolis toward the creation of an outdoor Peace Garden—a vision Larry designed many years ago and one that will now be brought to life in his name. Todd and the family sincerely thank all who have offered their love, support, and thoughtful consideration during this time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on February 28, 2026, at Unity of Indianapolis, 907 N. Delaware Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202, to honor a life deeply and beautifully lived.
