Larry J. Gonzales, 73, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born December 5, 1951, Larry spent his entire life in the Houston Heights community. He proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a distinguished 40-year career with the Houston Fire Department. Through courage, integrity, and perseverance, he rose through the ranks to retire as Assistant Chief of EMS and District Chief. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the city he served.

Larry was more than a veteran and firefighter—he was a man of profound character. He lived with forgiveness and grace, never quick to judge and always willing to help. Known for his humor and gift for storytelling, he could bring light to any room with a funny tale told in his unique way. He had a special ability to listen to those often overlooked, offering guidance, encouragement, and a reminder to forgive oneself and never give up.

At the heart of his life was his devoted wife, Betty. Married on January 4, 2011, Betty stood faithfully by his side for nearly 15 years. Through difficult times, including Larry's health challenges, her unwavering love and support never faltered. Their marriage was a true partnership, built on loyalty, resilience, and devotion.

Larry's family will forever be grateful for the gift of three extra years granted by a lung transplant, which allowed for more laughter, more stories, and more memories together. While his passing reminds us that it was his time, his legacy of love and encouragement will continue to inspire.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Gonzales; his stepson, Jonathan Januhowski; his sisters, Denise Gaitz and Lisa Brezik; his brother-in-law, Charles Gaitz; nieces and nephews Tonya, Charles, and Dietrich Gaitz, Felicia Filayaw, Melissa Karasiewicz, Cameron and Brandon Brezik; and by his extended family, including brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws Tom (Mary), Patricia (Rick), Robert, Mark (April), David T. Krolczyk, and Lucy. He was a loving uncle to Krystal Kaase (Michael), Travis Krolczyk, and Max Krolczyk, who always made sure Uncle Larry was never left alone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Gonzales; his mother, Helen Gonzales; and his brother, Mark Gonzales.

A private service will be held with family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org.

Larry J. Gonzales will be remembered as a proud veteran, a trusted leader, a devoted husband, and a loyal friend. His stories, his laughter, and his unwavering support will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
