Larry Shinholster passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 73.



He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Shinholster; his mother, Evie Pyles Shinholster; brothers, Buddy Shinholster, Sam Shinholster, Pete Shinholster, Frank Shinholster, Joe Shinholster, Roland Shinholster, Don Shinholster, Bill Shinholster, Web Shinholster; and sister, Annie Laurie Christian.



He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Mary Jo Jordan Shinholster; daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Tim Donahue; his grandchildren Mary Kathryn, Austin, Alexandria and Andrew; his sisters Nancy Duckett, Estelle Webber and Linda Purmont; sister-in-laws Mary Ann Shinholster, Louis Ann Hutchins, Elvira Shinholster, Diane Shinholster and Yvonne Shinholster; his brother-in-law and sister-in law Johnny and Sandy Jordan; along with many special nieces, nephews, friends and former co-workers.



He was born on August 23, 1952 in Tuscaloosa, Al and was the youngest of 14 children. Larry attended and graduated from Holt High School in 1970. During his senior year he met his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo, also a 1970 graduate of Holt. He was a member of the Ironmen basketball and baseball teams, and the Warrior Conference Championship Baseball Team. After graduation he attended Calhoun Community College on a baseball scholarship.



On July 23, 1971 he married his high school sweetheart and spent the next 54 years building a life together. After nine years of marriage they welcomed their beloved child, Stephanie. His devotion and love of his family became his priority as a provider and protector, and what gave him the will to carry on even through this last year as his health declined. His memory will be cherished as a loving husband, Daddy and PawPaw, and fondly remembered by his cat, Trixie, who joined him daily for naps on the sofa.



Larry's celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel, 5434 Old Birmingham Hwy, Tuscaloosa, Al, 35404. Visitation will be in the chapel at 1:00 pm, with the celebration following at 2:00 pm. Larry was a simple man, spent most of his days in blue jeans and Bama T-Shirts, in his honor please come dressed as casual as you feel comfortable.



Honorary pallbearers are his friends and co-workers of Warrior Asphalt Refining; the doctors and medical staff at The Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center; the devoted team of nurses at DCH CICU; and his "staff of workers" as he was deservingly given the title of Project Manager, overseeing the building of his granddaughter's, Mary Kathryn, class float for ACA's Homecoming the past two years of 2023 and 2024.



In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Larry's memory to Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter, where they adopted Trixie.
