Laura Maria Beyer (nee Mertz), formerly of Butler, NJ, passed away on Friday, March 6th after a brief illness at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey. Born September 25th, 1942, Laura was 83 years old. She was the former wife of the late Norman Beyer. Laura is survived by two children, Louis Beyer of Butler, NJ and Lynda Herbeck (Beyer), of Woodstock, NY. Laura was the proud grandmother of one grandson, Kenneth (Kenny) Herbeck. Laura is also survived by her brother, John C. Mertz, (Margaret) of Chalfont, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.

Raised in Springfield in Union County, NJ, Laura was the daughter of the late Edward Miller Mertz and Martha M. Mertz (nee Mudron). She was a graduate of the Jonathan Dayton Regional High School in Springfield, Class of 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Drew University and a Master of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Laura was an avid reader and loved to share a good story. She was also very fond of the arts. She and her friend, George Enslee, frequented performances of the ballet and classical music. She was deeply committed to her church, where she contributed in numerous ways, and was a member of the choir. Laura was also a champion of women’s rights and issues.

Her family will remember her for her kindness, her thoughtful gifts, her generosity and most of all, her sense of humor and gentle spirit.

A memorial service will be held at the Boonton United Methodist Church, 626 Lathrop Ave, Boonton, NJ on Saturday, March 28th at 2 p.m. Community and congregational members are welcome to join her family there.
