Laurie Ellen (Lund) Cooney, 66, of West Barnstable, MA and longtime resident of Lunenburg, MA transitioned peacefully to heaven on March 19, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. Born in Hartford, CT, the daughter of the late Barbara (Langlois) and Thomas Lund. Laurie grew up in East Hartford, CT, graduating from East Hartford High School in 1978, and from Becker Junior College in 1980 where she majored in fashion merchandising.
In 1984 she married her high school sweetheart Bob Cooney. While building her career in fashion merchandising, Laurie simultaneously took the lead in completing the construction of their first home all during Bob’s military assignments. She had an absolute exuberance for life, fun and adventure, jumping at the chance to relocate with him to Texas in 1986.
She and Bob began their family in Cotuit, MA, in 1990. Her goal in life was to be a mother, and she absolutely knocked it out of the park. Laurie was often seen dancing with her children in the kitchen, telling them to “wash their paws” when they came in from outside, and making their clothes and Halloween costumes with her sewing machine. Her home and heart were always open to not only her family, but the entire neighborhood.
Laurie, Bob and their young children laid down roots in Lunenburg, MA in 1999. She was a selfless mother, wife, and friend, never missing a single football or field hockey game, snowmobiling winters with Bob even though she skied, and typically the first to call for “Pics?” restaurant on Friday nights to socialize with her friends. And yes, still seen dancing with her children in the kitchen, now with her newest lifelong friends.
After raising her children, Laurie worked for ten years as Lunenburg’s Turkey Hill Elementary School Administrative Secretary, retiring in 2020. With her loving, caring nature and beautiful smile, Laurie made a positive impact on every child who came through the door, offering a warm reassuring greeting or comforting talk if needed.
She approached every day with a passion and love for life, never turning down an opportunity for a fun time, often leading the way. Laurie was quick witted and the life of the party. She loved going to the Nantucket Christmas Stroll with her daughter, and as they boarded the ferry would say “this is the highlight” because they had the entire weekend of fun ahead of them. On every trip Laurie took, and there were many, no stranger she encountered was safe from her kind inquisitions to know them. She was always concerned about others and never shied away from asking “what’s your story?”.
Laurie kept a hotline open with her daughter and son, regularly speaking with them multiple times a day for hours on end. They spent much time outdoors together, whether it be hiking in the Cowdrey woods with the dogs, skiing, snowmobiling, or collecting sea glass. Laurie’s creative and entrepreneurial spirit led her to make necklaces out of the sea glass and start a business, Soul Glass Jewelry. She ultimately gave away more of the necklaces than sold, because that is who she was.
For 42 years she was the beloved wife of Bob Cooney, and together they shared 50 wonderful years. Devoted mother of Will Cooney and Meredith Nolan and her husband, Thomas Nolan. Loving grandmother of Tommy Nolan. Dear sister of Paula Gray and her husband Dan Gray, and treasured brother John Lund. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends.
Please join us in celebrating Laurie’s life on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 12pm - 3pm at The Bull Run Restaurant, 215 Great Road (Rt 2A), Shirley, MA.
In lieu of flowers, Laurie would want you to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
