LaVerne Mayer

1941 - 2026

LaVerne Marie "Love" Mayer (née Wichert), age 84, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, in Joliet, Illinois. Born on July 10, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, LaVerne lived a life defined by love, devotion, and resilience.

A proud graduate of St. Mary of Perpetual Help High School, LaVerne began her professional journey as a receptionist—though she fondly referred to herself as a "switchboard operator." She worked for Johnson Pipe & Supply and Dual Temp in the Bridgeport area of Chicago. Her career was marked not only by her dedication but also by the friendships she cultivated with colleagues like Terry Lill and Marge Kodis. Terry, who lived just two doors down from LaVerne, became a cherished companion; the two often spent late nights on the front stoop sharing coffee and stories until the early hours of the morning.

In addition to her work as a receptionist, LaVerne embraced an entrepreneurial spirit when she purchased and managed two apartment buildings. This venture showcased her independence and determination as she balanced her professional responsibilities with her role as a devoted single mother to her four children.

LaVerne's life revolved around her family. She was a strong, independent woman who dedicated herself to raising her children and later doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Busia." Her home was the heart of countless cherished memories, especially during the Christmas season when she hosted unforgettable holiday gatherings that brought together family, extended family, and friends.

A devout Catholic, LaVerne's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She found solace and strength in her beliefs, which guided her through life's challenges and joys. Her deep connection to family extended beyond her immediate household; she maintained relationships with her siblings—Andrew Wichert, Judith Wichert, and Stanley Wichert.

In her later years, LaVerne took an early retirement to care for her elderly mother in Sevierville, Tennessee. There, she embraced the tranquility of mountain views from her deck and enjoyed the quiet beauty of the area. Despite the distance from some of her loved ones, LaVerne remained deeply connected to her children through weekly phone calls that often lasted for hours. Her unwavering love and support were constants in their lives.

LaVerne is survived by her children: June Mayer (Terrance Simental), Michael Mayer, and Richard Mayer (Theresa Duran). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Marcus Duran, Samantha Duran-Pineda (Juan Pineda), TJ (Terrance) Simental Jr., and Kionna Simental; as well as great-grandchildren Juan Pineda Jr. and Janessa Pineda. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her son Danielle Mayer; parents Mary and Andrew Wichert; and other cherished family members who now welcome her into eternal rest.

LaVerne's legacy is one of love, strength, and devotion. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her remarkable life. Rest in peace, Busia—you will forever be loved.

With love always,
Your children & grandchildren
